Almost none. Irish rain does most of the work, panels have no moving parts, and most homeowners do nothing for years. Here is the honest, short list of what solar panels actually need.
Solar panels need very little maintenance, and in Ireland they need less than almost anywhere. There are no moving parts, our frequent rain rinses them naturally, and most homeowners do nothing at all for years and lose no meaningful output. The honest maintenance list is short - and none of it involves climbing on your roof.
For the vast majority of Irish roofs, no. Panels are mounted at a tilt, and rain running off a tilted, smooth glass surface carries away most dust and pollen on its own. The Irish climate does you a genuine favour here. Cleaning only becomes worth considering in a few specific cases: a very shallow roof pitch where water pools, heavy tree cover dropping sap and leaves, persistent bird mess, or a home near a source of heavy grime. Even then, the output loss from light soiling is usually only a few percent.
Don't climb up to clean them yourself
It is rarely worth the risk, and a pressure washer can damage the seals. If panels genuinely need cleaning, use a professional with proper access equipment and soft-brush/pure-water kit. For most homes it is simply never needed.
| Component | Typical lifespan | What it needs |
|---|---|---|
| Solar panels | 25-30+ years | Effectively nothing - rain does the work |
| Inverter | 10-15 years | One replacement over the system's life |
| Mounting & wiring | 25+ years | A visual check if you ever re-roof |
| Battery (if fitted) | 10-15 years | Managed automatically; no user upkeep |
Quality panels carry a performance warranty of 25-30 years, guaranteeing they still produce a high percentage of their original output decades in. Inverters typically carry a shorter warranty, which is why they are the one part most likely to be replaced once. Good monitoring means that if anything does drift, you spot it early and it is covered - rather than losing output silently for months.
The real 'maintenance' is monitoring
A solar system that is watched will tell you when something is wrong long before it costs you. That is the whole job - and the app does most of it for you.
